It’s Okay to Change Your Mind

We’re human-we all make mistakes.  Often times we are judged by how we react to the mistakes we have made.  Do we keep plugging along and ignore what we did and how it affects others?  Or do we recognize the error of our ways, humble ourselves, and go back and make amends?

Does our God allow us to change our minds-even about Him?  Christianity is many things, but it is not about guilt.  Our father in heaven loves us dearly.  He provides us with opportunity after opportunity to turn back to Him, to repent of our mistakes and choose to experience His mercy and grace-and not choose to experience guilt. Christ bore the cost of our guilt on the cross at Calvary.  All we have to do to experience this freedom is to believe in him and ask for forgiveness.  The question is are we willing to forget our pride and humbly come before Him and ask?

In the Parable of the Two Sons in Matthew 21: 28-32, Matthew recounts Jesus’ words as he speaks about a father and his two sons:

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons.  And he went to the first and said, Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’   29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went.   30 And he went to the other son and said the same.  And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go.   31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.”….

You can change your mind about Christ and still be in His will.  Sometimes the path to believing takes a long time…  there can be doubts along the way.  The point is you can come back-you can go to the field after you’ve first said you wouldn’t.  Now, you don’t want to delay decisions or not obey simply because you know you can change your mind later-but God’s grace prevails.  When you have realized your sin, go back to Christ and make amends.

Consider the next part of the parable:

Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.   32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes believed him.  And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.”

Changing our minds can be a good thing.  We should change our minds after we make poor decisions or hurt people.  We need to go back to them and ask for forgiveness. We need to show that we can swallow our pride.  But, before we humble ourselves to other people we need to humble ourselves before God.  If you need to change your mind about God-do it! It is okay.  Humbly go before Him and ask for forgiveness-it is never too late to make a good decision.  Go ahead and change your mind!
